The PYP Spanish program at TIS, created and taught by Heather Rosa Licini focuses on oral language acquisition. Ms. Rosa uses a playful variety of games, pictures, conversation prompts and songs, to encourage students to speak, sing, learn pronunciation and feel comfortable using Spanish orally. The Spanish program follows four Units of Inquiry, which both support and coincide with the school wide Program of Inquiry.
Students learn new vocabulary each day and consistently review essential language components, such as; greetings, questions, numbers, directions and the date. The TIS Spanish program delves into the structure and function of parts of speech. Students are encouraged to understand Spanish as a language spoken globally and to attain a deeper geographical and cultural understanding of Spanish. Native Spanish speakers are challenged to a more rigorous curriculum and are encouraged to help teach and become leaders within the Spanish classroom.
